3D Scanning at the Smithsonian -

The Smithsonian has gone all in with 3D scanning (and, it looks like, 3D printing).  With museums around the world (especially the Smithsonian) displaying only around 10 percent of their holdings, this technology holds great promise for making much greater portions of these priceless collections accessible to everyone.  Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore has a great section where the protagonist gains access to a warehouse filled with such undisplayed antiquities and, of course, these places have been fodder for movies (Raiders of the Lost Ark) and TV shows,  as well (Warehouse 13).
